This is a 5 movement "Epic" originally recorded in 1991 on a 4 track cassette recorder for a cassette project in 1992. I re-recorded the entire piece for this project. The performances are almost identical, but obviously the quality of the original recordings just didn't stand up to the rest of the album. I had always wanted to do another recording of it, and the musical and lyrical themes fit perfectly with the concept of this album.

The music was developed from a guitar jam I recorded by myself in my teaching studio one day in '91. I was tuned standard with drop D and started this little riff that wound up being movement III. Human Race. I just reached over and hit the record on my cassette player. When I listened back it inspired the rest of the piece...

Lyrically it is based on a piece of a scripture from the New Testament that basically says, "...moderation in all things..." and the struggle we face in achieving that. It is really about the war between the heart and the mind in us all.
